Why is mental health important?
Mental well being is as important as physical well being. WHO defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity”.
Studies have proven that mental illness like depression and anxiety increase the risk of many chronic physical ailments such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiac illnesses amongst many others.
Hence, its important to prioritize mental health.
How do I know if I am suffering from a mental illness or psychological stress?
A: although, most of us struggle with mental or emotional stress in one way or other, you can know that you require medical assistance if
a) you find it difficult to function effeciently.
b) you find yourself behaving or feeling different from what your usual self.
c) if others around you notice and point out changes in your mood, behavious or interactions.
Is medication only way to treat anxiety and or depression?
A. Besides medication, various forms of psychotherapies and counseling can also help an individual recover from depression and anxiety. However the ssme is best assesed by a mental health proffessional.
